Ellenismos Greek Dancers is a group of British, Greek and Cypriot dance enthusiasts who dance for enjoyment and aim to promote Greek music and dance to a wider audience.
The group regularly provide public performances, and from time to time, undertakes private engagements. The group has an ever expanding diary of commitments, often being more than 12 months into the future. Ellenismos are pleased to include, in their recent performance history, such prestigious events as:
The National Trust at Sudbury Hall Nottingham City Council at Newstead Abbey for the Byron Festival Fundraising event for Children In Need Nottingham City Council for several council sponsored events Various local community events: annual carnivals: well dressings: Centre piece performance for a multi- national company sales event East Midland Airport concourse for promotion of new Greek air route Various visits to schools to assist in the National Curriculum Nottingham County Council at Rufford Park Bakewell Town Arts and Music Festival
Ellenismos has a collection of authentic costumes, which are always worn at performances. They range from mainland Greece, Cyprus, and many of the Greek Islands. Costumes worn will depend on which dances are being performed, and a complete performance may well include several changes of costume. Dances originate from Asia Minor, Macedonia, and the Ionian and Aegean Sea islands. Some dances date from the Byzantine era, which greatly influenced religious themed dances. Ellenismos performances always include dances of modern times with “Zorba” and “Hasapikos” being firm favourites. Audience participation is always an important part of our displays.
Ellenismos is a non-profit making organization and donated fees are used to extend our collection of costumes.
